White pizza uses simple ingredients but always feels a little fancy, and is sometimes called pizza bianca at restaurants.

Why We Love White Pizza

  • Rich Creamy Pizza – This white pizza recipe makes a pizza with a rich and creamy topping that is gooey and so satisfying for pizza night.
  • Great Option Without Red Sauce– For the longest time my kid wouldn’t touch anything with red marinara or any tomato sauce, and this pizza was a great alternative to plain cheese, and is pretty delicious for my husband and I also. The white sauce is made from the olive oil and ricotta cheese mixture but is different from alfredo sauce.
  • Simple Ingredients– No crazy ingredients, this pizza is easy to make with simple ingredients you may already have on hand.

  • pizza dough storebought tap to use my homemade pizza dough recipe
  • cornmeal (optional)
  • all purpose flour- for rolling the dough
  • ricotta cheese whole milk
  • grated parmesan cheese
  • garlic  finely minced, fresh garlic will give you the most flavor but jarred minced garlic works too.
  • dried oregano – If using fresh oregano you’ll need about 1 1/2 teaspoons of fresh oregano chopped.
  • dried basil – If using fresh basil, you’ll need 1 1/2 teaspoons of fresh basil chopped.
  • salt
  • pepper
  • olive oil
  • shredded mozzarella cheese – you can also use sliced fresh mozzarella if you prefer for an even more decadent pizza.

Sometimes I’ll add a little fresh basil or parsley as a garnish before serving, yum!

Ricotta cheese is the only ingredient I don’t keep in my kitchen regularly. When I’m making this white pizza, I’ll also make recipes like Cheesy Baked Ziti and Lasagna Soup to use the rest of the ricotta cheese. I will also sometimes reduce the ricotta in the baked ziti just to use up the leftover ricotta from my white pie.

How To Make White Pizza

  1. Make the pizza dough with my pizza dough recipe, or if using storebought dough allow the pizza dough to sit on the counter uncovered for at least thirty minutes so it stretches easier.
  2. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Add ¼ cup of cornmeal to a baking sheet with a rim and spread it out over the pan.
  3. Gently stretch the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface. Add a sprinkle of flour as you stretch the dough if the dough becomes sticky. Add flour to the rolling pin and roll the pizza dough until it is at least twelve inches across, then move to the prepared pan with cornmeal. Curl the edge of the dough in just a little to give the pizza a thicker crust and a round shape.
  1. In a small mixing bowl add ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese, garlic, oregano, basil, salt and pepper. Mix well until fully combined.

While many pizza toppings can be added to this recipe, here are a few of our favorite toppings to add.

Can I Bake This Pizza On A Pizza Stone?

Yes you can bake this pizza on a pizza stone instead of using a pizza pan or a baking sheet. Pizza stones need to be added to the oven when cold, and preheated in the oven for at least thirty minutes after the oven comes to temperature. Pizza stones help you bake pizza at higher temperatures evenly in an home oven and does create a delicious pizza. Follow these tips for baking pizza with a pizza stone.

Why Is There So Much Cornmeal Added To The Pan?

I’ve had a few people tell me I use too much cornmeal for the pan. There will be some excess on the pan afterward. The cornmeal not only coats the bottom of the pizza for a delicious crust but also the excess cornmeal helps keep the dough from sticking to the pan.
When making pizza at home I honestly just throw a handful of cornmeal onto the pan and it works every time. When I measured what I usually add it was about 1/4 cup.

How Long Will White Pizza Last?

White pizza will last for about four days when stored properly. Store leftover white pizza in a covered airtight container in the refrigerator.

Can You Freeze This White Pizza?

Yes, once baked this white pizza recipe freezes great. Store in a freezer safe container or freezer zip top bag. You can freeze in individual slices or as a full pizza. Expect this homemade pizza to taste it’s best when eaten within 2-3 months from the freezer.
If you will be freezing for a long time, I suggest wrapping the pizza in foil or freezer paper after frozen. This will help protect the pizza from freezer burn.

Are White Pizzas Healthier?

White pizzas can vary in how healthy they are and sometimes are healthier than traditional pizza..

A traditional white pizza has three different kinds of cheeses and olive oil which compared to a basic cheese pizza with just red sauce or vegetables can have more calories.

Regular cheese pizza sometimes has extra cheese and garlic butter, which would put it about even with a white pizza or sometimes even heavier in calories. When you start adding heavier meats to a pizza like sausage and pepperoni, the pizza can quickly go up in calories.

All pizza should be eaten and enjoyed in moderation, but white pizza can sometimes be a great lighter choice depending on the pizza, other toppings, and the crust choice.

Is Alfredo Pizza The Same As White Pizza?

Alfredo pizza and white pizza have some similar ingredients, but are actually different pizzas. Alfredo sauce is typically made with a sauce made from butter, heavy cream and parmesean cheese.

White pizza in the US will typically feature and herbed ricotta cheese, parmesan or romano cheese, garlic, and often olive oil topped with mozzarella.

More traditional Italian white pizza from Italy is usually more of a focaccia-style bread drizzled with olive oil and fresh garlic. Pizza in Italy is more foccacia-like in general then we see in the US, and doesn’t always have cheese.
