Quick to make and hilarious to eat, this reindeer poop is a chocolate snack mix that is similar to Muddy Buddies, also known as puppy chow.
This chocolate and peanut butter treat will bring lots of giggles to your holiday. Honestly kids and adults couldn’t stop laughing about it when I made this snack mix. Especially the middle school boys, ha!

Ingredients For Reindeer Poop Recipe
- 6 cups Corn Pops cereal or similar cereal
- 1 cup peanut butter I used creamy peanut butter, but you can also use crunchy. I would not recommend using natural peanut butter (the kind with the oil on top) in this recipes as the oil can separate too much.
- 1 cup chocolate chips – semi sweet
- 1 teaspoon vegetable oil – can also use canola oil, coconut oil, or whatever cooking oil you have
- 1/2 teaspoon honey
- 1 cup cocoa powder – this should be unsweetened. I used half regular cocoa and half dark cocoa but can use all regular unsweetened cocoa powder.
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
How To Make Reindeer Poop Snack Mix
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a microwave-safe large bowl, add peanut butter, chocolate chips and vegetable oil. Heat on half power in the microwave for one minute, then stir. Continue heating at half power in 30-second increments to melt the chocolate until a smooth chocolate sauce, about 2-3 minutes. If you need to melt the chocolate on the stovetop use a double boiler method so the chocolate is melted and smooth.
- Pour honey into the chocolate mixture and stir. Add about two cups of the cereal and stir well until coated. Continue adding cereal two cups at a time and stirring until all of the cereal is evenly coated.
- In a large container or a gallon-size freeze zip top bag, add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, then mix together.
- Add the chocolate-coated cereal into the cocoa powder mix. Close the container well, then shake until the cereal is fully coated.
- Pour the mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to allow the chocolate to set. Then enjoy!
Can I Make This Reindeer Poop Dessert Without Peanut Butter?
You could make this reindeer poop recipe with just chocolate and cocoa but it may be a little on the sweet side. I haven’t tried making it that way so if you try it let me know.
Peanut butter chips can be swapped for peanut butter. I would recommend leaving out the honey if you are using peanut butter chips as they can be sweeter then peanut butter.
You can use almond butter, sun butter, or any other peanut butter alternative spread that is similar to peanut butter to make this snack.
What Can I Swap For Chocolate Chips?
You can dark chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips or white chocolate chips in this recipe.
You can also chop up chocolate bars and use it in place of the chocolate chips. About 6 ounces of chocolate would be needed in place of the chocolate chips.
Can I Add A Nut To This Mix?
You can add your favorite nuts like peanuts, cashews or pecans. I would start with about a half of a cup.
Also try adding things like a mini marshmallow, pretzel pieces or even melting in caramel. Don’t worry it will still look enough like poop even if you add in other ingredients, but will taste delicious.
How Long Will Reindeer Poop Snack Mix Last?
This chocolatey mix will taste it’s best if eaten within seven days of making it. It can be stored in a closed airtight container on the counter.
Does Chocolate Reindeer Poop Freeze?
Yes you can freeze this reindeer poop snack mix in a freezer-safe zip-top bag or freezer container. It will taste best if eaten within 2-3 months.
How To Package Reindeer Poop
Reindeer poop isn’t the kind of snack mix you just give without explanation as it can leave people confused or wary of your treat. I like to put the chocolate in clear cellphone bags then package them in cute reindeer containers. Small holiday tins also work, but I usually pick those up at the dollar store or the craft store.
Try adding a gift tag and a reindeer container to your snack mix. I like to add this short poem to the gift tag for a laugh
“Christmas is arriving and so are the deer
Listen closely and their hooves you will hear,
Along with them comes a special treat,
Reindeer droppings for you to eat!!!!!”
