Why We Love These Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Cookies

  • Triple peanut butter in every bite – With peanut butter in the dough, plus peanut butter chips and chopped peanut butter cups, these cookies are packed with that chocolate and peanut butter combo from start to finish.
  • Fun for kids to help make – This is an easy cookie recipe where kids can help mix, scoop, and press the Reese’s Pieces and peanut butter cup pieces on top. It’s simple, a little messy in a good way, and fun to make together.
  • A cookie that disappears fast – Between the colorful candy and the chunks of peanut butter cups, these cookies look fun and always seem to be the first ones gone at family gatherings, parties, or after-school snack time.

If you love that chocolate and peanut butter combo, you might also like these peanut butter swirl brownies or these easy peanut butter chocolate rice krispie treats. Homemade buckeyes are a Midwest favorite, a no-bake peanut butter ball dipped in chocolate that tastes a lot like a homemade Reese’s and always shows up at holidays and game day.

  • butter – softened, unsalted
  • white sugar
  • brown sugar
  • peanut butter– Use creamy or crunchy peanut butter (not natural). Natural peanut butter can separate and make the cookies oily.
  • egg – large
  • vanilla extract
  • cup flour – all purpose flour
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • peanut butter chips– You can use Reese’s brand or another brand. Chocolate chips can be swapped in for a less peanut butter-heavy cookie.
  • Reese’s Pieces candy – Divided between the dough and topping the cookies for extra color and crunch.
  • Mini Reese’s peanut butter cups – Chop into larger chunks so they hold their shape and don’t melt too much in the oven.

How To Make Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Cookies

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar in a large bowl. Add peanut butter, egg, and vanilla to the butter mixture. Mix until all the wet ingredients are combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking soda and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.
  1. Fold in all of the peanut butter chips and 1/4 cup Reese’s pieces, setting the remaining 1/4 cup of Reese’s pieces to the side.
  1. Using a cookie scoop, make cookie dough balls with about two tablespoons of dough per cookie. Place the cookies with at least two inches of space between the cookies on the baking sheet.
  1. Chop up the Reese’s Peanut Butter cups into pieces while the cookies bake.
  2. Bake the pan of cookies for 9-11 minutes. The edges of the cookies will just start to brown but the inside of the cookie will still be a little gooey when you remove them.
  3. While cookies are still hot on the pan, press the remaining Reese’s Pieces and chopped Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups into the top of the cookies. Let the cookies cool for a few minutes on the pan before moving to a cooling rack to finish cooling. Enjoy!

Tips For The Best Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Cookies

  • Don’t overbake – These cookies will still look a little soft in the center when you pull them out. That’s what keeps them chewy instead of dry, similar to how we bake our 3 ingredient peanut butter cookies.
  • Press extra candy on top after baking – This is the easiest way to get that bakery-style look and make sure every cookie has peanut butter cups and Reese’s Pieces on top.
  • Chop peanut butter cups into bigger chunks – Smaller pieces can melt too much. Bigger chunks hold their shape better and give you those gooey bites.
  • Use regular creamy peanut butter – Natural peanut butter can separate and make the cookies greasy, so stick with the no-stir kind for best results.

Variation Ideas For Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Cookies

  • Swap the peanut butter cups– You can use other brands of peanut butter cups in this recipe of course. You could also use white chocolate peanut butter cups or the orange or green peanut butter cups for other variations. Almond butter cups could also be delicious in this recipe.
  • Try other kinds of chips– Peanut butter chips are delicious, but semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips or dark chocolate chunks can also easily be swapped into this recipe for a little less peanut butter flavor.
  • Swap the Reeses Pieces– While Reese’s Pieces are part of the name, other colorful chocolates like M&M’s or even Peanut Butter M&M’s could be swapped in this cookie recipe to make your perfect cookie.

How To Store Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Cookies

Store these cookies in an airtight container like a cookie jar or a bowl with a lid. These cookies could last for 3-5 days stored at room temperature this way, though I’ve never had them around that long!

I like to place pieces of wax paper or parchment paper in between the layers of cookies to keep them from sticking (or smooshing) the cookies below them.

These cookies will also last for about three months in the freezer in a freezer bag to still taste like fresh.

Notes

I used creamy peanut butter, but crunchy will also work in these cookies. I recommend using peanut butter that is already stirred. The type of peanut butter with the oil that needs to be stirred in can sometimes separate if you add it to baking.
This recipe calls for 12 of the mini-wrapped Reese’s cups which is about 3 ounces. In the recipe we chop up the Reeses to add them to the cookies, so there is no reason you can’t use the extra mini peanut butter cups or chop up full-size peanut butter cups.
Regular Size Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups– You need 3 ounces or about 4 regular-sized Reeses Peanut Butter Cups chopped.
Minis Unwrapped Reeses Peanut Butter Cups– (These are smaller than the miniature Reeses Peanut Butter Cup, and are often used for ice cream topping.) You need 3 ounces or about 24 pieces of the minis unwrappd.
