Easy French Bread French Toast

I’ve been making this french bread french toast since my kid was little. It’s a weekend staple around this house, but I’ll sometimes make extra so we have it for quick breakfasts over the next few days. The size and chewiness is perfect for little kids, but secretly I love it too because the bread is chewier and it usually doesn’t end up soggy.

Why We Love French Bread French Toast

  • A Breakfast The Whole Family Will Love. This is the kind of breakfast that gets everyone to the table without complaints. Quick enough for a lazy weekend morning and a little more fun than regular toast.
  • A Great Excuse To Use Up That Loaf. If you grabbed a French bread loaf earlier in the week and never got around to eating it, this is the perfect way to use it up. I’ll even grab one off the day-old discount rack just to make this, it keeps a special breakfast budget friendly.
  • The Perfect Size For Little Hands. The rounds from slicing a baguette are just the right size for kids to pick up and dip in syrup, basically homemade french toast sticks but chewier. My daughter grew up eating these and still asks for them!

  • French bread or another baguette style bread, I used a 14 ounce loaf, but anywhere between 12-16 ounces should work. We want bread that is stale, a few days old. If your bread is fresh and you want to make this now, give the slices a quick run through the toaster first so the custard soaks in better.
  • eggs
  • milk – I used 2%, you can use the milk of your choice
  • vanilla extract – use a little more if you like, this isn’t something I measure as closely.
  • cinnamon – you can add more or less to your family’s preference
  • salt – a little bit brings out the cinnamon and vanilla flavor.
  • butter – you can also use spray cooking oil as this is for inside the pan, but butter will give the french toast more flavor

How To Make French Bread French Toast

  1. Slice the French bread loaf into one inch individual pieces using a serrated knife, then set to the side.
  1. To a large mixing bowl, add eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and salt to form a custard. Mix well with a whisk until well combined. Place the bowl of custard mixture and the sliced french bread next to the stove. Place an additional large serving platter or plate near the stove.
  1. Place a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add a tablespoon of butter to the pan, letting it melt.
  2. Dip each piece into the egg mixture until fully coated on both sides. Allow any excess to drip from the bread before adding to the skillet.
  1. Add 3-4 slices to the skillet in small batches, making sure the bread slices aren’t touching. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned. Add additional butter to the pan as needed in between batches. Serve with warm maple syrup or more butter and enjoy!

What To Serve With French Bread French Toast

A white plate with two slices of French Bread French toast and three breakfast sausages, set on a marble surface with syrup, a shaker, and butter nearby.

This quick breakfast pairs easily with classic breakfast sides.

For some extra protein, try warming up some sausage links or patties, chicken sausage or bacon. Scrambled eggs are also quick and easy on the side. My chicken sausage egg bake or my sausage egg muffins also make a great side that can bake while you make the french toast.

I often serve breakfast with fresh fruit. Berries are great, but don’t forget fruit like sliced bananas, apples, grapes and oranges. You can also make a fruit salad, which can be great for using up leftover fruit at the end of the week.

A sprinkle of powdered sugar, a dollop of whipped cream, a drizzle of jam, or even a few sprinkles can all make breakfast feel like an extra special treat.

If you have a few more people around the table, try adding some baby roasted potatoes on the side.

How Long Will French Bread French Toast Last?

Leftovers of this french bread french toast last about 4-5 days in the refrigerator if you store it in a covered, airtight container.

You can reheat it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, but I prefer to warm it up in the toaster oven, I just toast it like bread. You can also use the air fryer, expect about 3-5 minutes at around 375 degrees

This french toast also freezes really well. Let the slices cool completely, then lay them flat on a baking sheet to freeze for about an hour before transferring to a freezer bag. They’ll keep for about 2-3 months. Reheat straight from frozen in the toaster oven or air fryer.

French bread french toast is a weekend breakfast staple we've been making forever in this house. The chewy bread holds up so much better than regular sandwich bread, and those golden rounds are just the right size for little kid hands to dip in syrup.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread or another baguette style bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk I used 2%, you can use the milk of your choice
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter divided

Instructions

  • Slice the French bread loaf into one inch individual pieces using a serrated knife, then set to the side.
    1 loaf French bread
  • To a large mixing bowl, add eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and salt to form a custard. Mix well with a whisk until well combined. Place the bowl of custard mixture and the sliced french bread next to the stove. Place an additional large serving platter or plate near the stove.
4 large eggs, ½ cup milk, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Place a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add a tablespoon of butter to the pan, letting it melt.
    3 tablespoons butter
  • Dip each piece into the egg mixture until fully coated on both sides. Allow any excess to drip from the bread before adding to the skillet.
  • Add 3-4 slices to the skillet in small batches, making sure the bread slices aren't touching. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until browned. Add additional butter to the pan as needed in between batches. Serve with warm maple syrup or more butter and enjoy!

Notes

End pieces work great here. They may only brown on one side, but they still taste delicious. No need to discard the ends.
Using a chewier baguette (like sourdough)? Let the slices soak an extra 10-15 minutes so the custard soaks all the way through and you avoid a dry center.
For the pan, I used a cast iron skillet, but any large skillet or griddle works. A griddle is great if you’re making a big batch! If you only have a smaller pan, just work in batches so the slices aren’t crowded.
