Pineapple dole whip magic seems to be in every ice cream shop and zoo lately. The delicious treat started as a Disney World special extraordinaire, but now is making its rounds.

While a treat in Disney World, Disneyland or our local zoo is great fun, I like to make a little fun at home too.  At home, this copycat version of a Dole Whip is made with whole ingredients, so it’s also a healthy treat too.

I also happen to be pretty darn good at picking out the perfect pineapple. A good ripe pineapple can make a homemade Dole Whip go from delicious to wow!

Wait, What Is Pineapple Dole Whip?

Pineapple Dole Whip is a pineapple flavored soft serve or smoothie style dessert originally sold exclusively at Disneyland and Disney World. Dole Whip Copycat version are popping up at many restaurants.

Nondairy, gluten-free, Dole Whip can be a pretty healthy treat. Made at home with whole ingredients it can be even better!

Frozen pineapple sliced, almond milk, honey in bowls and fresh pineapple from overhead.

Pineapple especially can be really good for you and contains lots of vitamin C, is rich in antioxidants, fiber, aids digestion among other health benefits. But don’t let it fool you, this is a tasty treat that stands alone on its own.

I make my copycat Dole Whip in my food processor, but any good blender will work also.

How Do I Pick The Perfect Pineapple?

The easiest way to pick the perfect pineapple is to smell it by the base. A pineapple should smell sweet, and a good one is usually fragrant. If the outside skin is still very green but it smells sweet, let it ripen on your counter for a few days before you slice into it.

I wait to cut into my pineapple until the outside is a  little yellow if I can. Another great trick to check the ripeness of a pineapple is to pull out a single leaf. If the leaf comes out of the pineapple easily, it’s a ripe pineapple.

This recipe does call for frozen pineapple, which will also naturally make pineapples taste sweeter. It’s totally ok if your pineapple isn’t perfectly ripe, it will still be delicious.  You can use already frozen pineapple as well if you prefer not to freeze it yourself.

My Kid Doesn’t Like Pineapple, What Can I Do?

Hey my kid too, but she loved Dole Whip despite. Pineapple can be super acidic for some kids. The almond milk and honey in this pineapple Dole Whip recipe can help to cut through that acid and makes it taste a little more delicious for kids.

You can also other flavors of Dole Whip. Simply substitute half of the frozen pineapple for another fruit. We love strawberries and also mango at our house! Or try this delicious Mixed Berry Smoothie too!

Wait Is Dole Whip The Same As Ice Cream? Is it a smoothie?

Dole Whip is not the same as ice cream which often has dairy and lots of extra sugar. Dole Whip is a non-dairy dessert and is even slightly different from other non-dairy desserts like sorbet.

You could drink a homemade Dole Whip with a straw like a smoothie, or just drink it out of a cup.

Is Dole Whip Nondairy? Is It Gluten Free?

Yes, both the original Dole Whip from Disney and this copycat version are nondairy. This recipe is also great for vegans and naturally gluten-free.

Instructions

  • Slice and freeze two cups of pineapple or use prefrozen pineapple.
  • In a food processor or blender, add pineapple and almond milk. Blend until smooth.
  • Taster your Pineapple Dole Whip. If desired add a tablespoon of honey. Taste again and add a second tablespoon of honey if desired.
  • Pour into glasses and serve Pineapple Dole Whip with a spoon or straw. Enjoy!

Notes

Coconut milk and other non-dairy (or dairy) substitutes can easily be exchanged in this recipe.
Taste your Pineapple Dole Whip recipe first before adding honey. There can be a little variation if your pineapple happens to be sweeter, or if your almond milk is already sweetened. Add a tablespoon at a time, tasting for desired sweetness.
Prefrozen bagged pineapple can be used in place of homemade fresh pineapple that you freeze.
