Why We Love Buffalo Chicken Dip
- Great For A Party – This warm gooey dip is always a hit at a party with both adults and any kids who don’t mind a little kick. The creamy ranch mixed with the buffalo flavor makes the best dip for game day, holidays and more. It’s also a great dip to take somewhere to share as the slow cooker will keep it warm.
- 5 Ingredients Only – Perfect for when you don’t have a lot of time to spend but want something delicious! With only five ingredients, this dip is pretty easy to make. Using precooked chicken, the dip is fairly dump and go! Plus you can serve it with a whole variety of dippers like pretzels or carrots. It’s also great for the low carb crowd or just for your next party.

Dollop it into a tortilla or make it the filling of a grilled cheese sandwich with mozzarella cheese. See all of my leftover ideas further down the page to find the best option for your leftovers.
Ingredients For Buffalo Chicken Dip
Find the full printable recipe with specific measurements and directions below in the recipe card.
- cream cheese cubed, use full fat cream cheese
- chicken broth
- chicken cooked, I’ve used shredded chicken breast
- ranch dressing
- hot sauce – I prefer Frank’s Redhot Sauce but you can use your favorite. Use a spicier hot sauce for a spicier dip!
- cheddar cheese shredded, I strongly recommend shredding your own as using pre-shredded cheese can make the dip more grainy. You can also use mozzarella cheese or monterey jack.
You can top this dip with blue cheese crumbles, green onions or crispy onion strings (like is used on top of green bean casserole)
How To Make Buffalo Chicken Dip
- Spray the slow cooker lightly with cooking spray. Add cubed cream cheese and chicken broth to the slow cooker. Top with shredded chicken.
- Pour ranch and hot sauce over the chicken. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the chicken.
- Cook on low heat for 3-4 hours or on high heat for 1 ½ hours. Mix after an hour and then recover. Repeat stirring if needed until heated through and cream cheese and cheese are melted making the dip creamy.
- Flip the slow cooker to the warm setting until you are ready to enjoy. Serve with tortilla chips, carrots, celery or your favorite dippers and enjoy!
Why Is My Buffalo Chicken Dip Runny?
Buffalo chicken dip can be runny if you use a reduced fat cream cheese. It can also be runny if you use too much ranch dressing or not enough chicken.
You can thicken the dip by adding more shredded chicken, or even more cubes of full fat cream cheese or even more shredded cheddar cheese.
The dip will also thicken some as it cools naturally.
Why Is My Dip Too Thick?
This creamy buffalo chicken dip can sometimes be a little too thick if you add too much chicken. The chicken can soak up too much of the liquid and leave you with a thick dip. Also if the dip cooks too long it can sometimes thicken too much.
To thin the dip out you can add a little more of the ranch dressing, but it will give it more ranch flavor. You can also add a little sour cream or plain greek yogurt until the dip is the consistency you prefer.
Why Is My Buffalo Chicken Dip Grainy?
If you use pre-shredded cheddar cheese it has a coating that keeps the cheese from sticking together. This coating will also make the buffalo chicken dip grainy. Instead shred the cheese straight from the block for the best results.
What To Serve With Buffalo Chicken Dip?
his crockpot buffalo chicken dip can be served with a variety of dippers. Here are a few ideas to try.
- Carrot sticks or baby carrots
- Celery sticks
- Bell pepper strips
- Corn chips
- Tortilla chips
- Pretzels
- Pita chips or mini pita bread
- Thicker potato chips – I like the ones with ridges so the chips don’t break
- Thick crackers
All of these dippers also work well with the apple walnut chicken salad or the cranberry pecan chicken salad.
How Do I Use Buffalo Chicken Dip As A Main Dish?
You can also Buffalo Chicken dip to create main dishes. It’s a great dinner or can be a great way to use up leftover dip after a party. I always prefer this cheesy dip warm to cold, but it can be enjoyed cold.
Spread leftover buffalo chicken dip as the filling on a sandwich, try in a grilled cheese or inside Sweet Hawaiian rolls as sliders. Try it with mozzarella cheese! You can also spoon buffalo chicken dip onto flour tortillas or corn tortillas as tacos or as the filling of a quesadilla
Try buffalo chicken dip it on top of nachos with your favorite toppings or make Buffalo Chicken Fries. Tatertots also work great as the base.
Roll and bake inside of crescent rolls as an ooey gooey buffalo chicken dip filling. Or try scooping buffalo chicken dip over mac and cheese.
Sometimes the leftovers of this dish can be the best part!
How Do I Reheat This Dip?
Using The Microwave – You can reheat this dip in the microwave in a microwave safe bowl in just a minute or two. I stir about every 30 seconds.
Using The Oven – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the dip in a oven safe dish and cover with foil. Heat for 15-120 minutes or until warm all the way through.
Using The Slow Cooker – You can also reheat the buffalo chicken dip in the slow cooker. It generally takes about 45 minutes to an hour to reheat the dip on high depending on how much dip you have left. If you only have a little bit of dip left I recommend reheating it in the microwave. You can also use a dip sized 1.5 quart crockpot for a small portion of dip, it’s designed to feed 1-2 people a meal, which can be a great size for dips. I used my 6 quart slow cooker for the original recipe.
How Long Will Buffalo Chicken Dip Last?
Expect this dip will last for about three to four days safely when stored in the refrigerator in a covered airtight container.
Cooked chicken only lasts about three to four days according to the USDA when stored correctly, so it is also dependent on how fresh your cooked chicken is. If using prepackaged chicken or canned chicken, you can generally safely start counting from the day you open the chicken.
I have seen some recipes that state that buffalo chicken can be eaten up to five days after making the dish. I personally am not comfortable risking eating cooked chicken after about four days. If you choose to eat it after five days, the chances of the dip having spoiled go up significantly.
How Long Can Buffalo Chicken Dip Stay In The Slow Cooker Safely?
It is not safe to eat cooked chicken that has been sitting out at room temperature for more then two hours. It’s best if you need this dip to last for a party a little longer to keep it covered in the crockpot using the keep warm function to keep it at a safe temperature.
