How To Make Red White And Blue Cookies

These cookies are so simple to make! You’ll start by making a regular chocolate chip cookie dough. Then we will fold in some bright colored red white and blue chocolates and bake the cookies. Easy peasy!

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Make the dough by adding the softened butter, white sugar and brown sugar into the bowl. Cream them together until the whole mixture is fluffy and well mixed. Mixing this cookie dough can be done by hand, but is much faster if done with a mixer.

Next add the eggs and vanilla to the batter. Mix it all together until all of the wet ingredients are mixed into the batter.

Next mix the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Give it a good stir so the rising agents (baking soda and powder) and salt mix evenly in the flour. This helps make sure you don’t have any pockets of these ingredients accidentally.

An empty bowl with a spoon sits next to a bowl of cookie dough with dry flour being mixed into the dough.

Once the dough forms and all the flour is mixed in we are ready to add the chocolate. Gently fold the chocolate chip and the M&M candies into the batter. Mix the chocolate in on low if using a mixer.

I often fold in the chocolate candies by hand with a silicone spatula even if I mix the rest of the dough with a mixer. This helps keep the chocolate candies from cracking.

Portion out the cookie dough using a cookie scoop or a tablespoon. This scoop holds about 2 tablespoons of dough. Bake the cookies at 375 for 12-14 minutes or until the cookies are a golden brown. If your scoop is smaller, start checking the cookies doneness a few minutes earlier.

How To Store These Cookies

Store cookies in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. Make sure the cookies have cooled completely before closing them in a container. Moisture can get trapped and make the cookies soggy.

Freezing The Cookie Dough

Cookie dough can be frozen for up to 3 months. I recommend freezing as a large log type shape and wrapping in freezer paper. Slice and bake the cookies when you are ready from the freezer to make these yummy July 4th cookies.

Alternatively, you can portion the dough out into cookies and freeze in round dough balls. Place a layer of freezer paper in between layers in a container or freezer zip-top bag.

Frozen dough may need an extra few minutes to bake. Be sure to watch the cook time carefully.

Variations And Other Add-Ins

  • Peanut or Peanut Butter Red White And Blue M&Ms make a delicious substitute for regular and are sold in patriotic color packs in stores.
  • Hershey’s has a new red white and blue chocolate bar that could be chopped up in place of the chocolate chips.
  • Adding sprinkles in patriotic colors can give your cookies more of a pop of color.
  • I’ve sometimes used a full cup of mini chocolate chips instead of a half a cup to make them extra chocolatey.
  • Swap white or peanut butter chocolate chips for regular chocolate chips

  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 2 Cups All Purpose Flour
  • ½ Teaspoon Baking Soda
  • ½ Teaspoon Baking Powder
  • ½ Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Mini Chocolate Chips
  • 1 Cup Red White & Blue M&M’s Plus a few extras to decorate the cookies

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Add softened butter, brown sugar and white sugar to a mixer or large bowl. Cream together for 2-3 minutes until full mixed.
  • Add into the bowl egg and vanilla. Mix another minute until well mixed.
  • In a medium size mixing bowl combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix the dry ingredients well.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix well until a dough forms.
  • Stop the mixer and add in the chocolate chips and M&M’s to the dough. Gently mix on low. You can also do this step with a silicone spatula. Mixing the dough on medium or high can cause the M&Ms sometimes to crack.

  • Bake for 12-14 minutes or until golden brown around the edges. Cool on a cooling rack or clean kitchen towel.

Notes

  • This recipe makes larger cookies. You could also make a smaller size cookie and make 18 cookies from this recipe. Adjust your baking time to 10-12 minutes if making smaller cookies.
