Prep The Filling

  1. Slice chicken breast, bell pepper and onion into ¼ inch strips. Slice so the meat and vegetables are about the same size so everything cooks evenly. Some thicker chicken breasts may need to be sliced in half as well as into slices to get strips that are roughly ¼ inch thick. Prep any additional toppings you prefer as needed, see notes.

Recipe Variations For Chicken Fajita Wraps

You can totally get creative with adding toppings and fillings to the chicken fajita filling. The best part is you can make this recipe to your family’s individual tastes easily.

Cheese And Sour Cream – Shredded cheese is an easy addition that most families enjoy. Use a shredded cheddar cheese, Monterey jack, or any cheese blend you prefer on tacos and quesadillas. Warm queso can also be added on top, though this is usually a little easier to serve at the table. Sour cream is also a favorite and can be added inside the wrap or served on top at the table.

Meat – Chicken is a staple in our house, but don’t be afraid to swap the fajita chicken with what you have on hand. Try sliced steak, shrimp, or you can even use leftover shredded pork from another meal like these instant pot carnitas or leftover shredded slow cooker pork loin. You can also make these fajitas vegetarian by skipping the meat and adding some of the vegetables listed below.

Vegetables – Fajitas traditionally include bell peppers and onions, but sometimes include other vegetables too. I’ve seen my favorite Mexican restaurants include cooked tomatoes, zucchini or yellow summer squash, all of which are delicious additions. Make sure to cook any water well from these veggies so they don’t make the burrito soggy.

Corn can also be added, or you can also add corn salsa. Guacamole or avocado, diced tomatoes, Pico de Gallo can also all be easily added to this dish if you have them.

Beans – Beans aren’t usually in fajitas, they are usually served on the side. You can add beans to the burritos. Try black beans, kidney beans or a dollop of warm refried beans inside.

Can I Prep Chicken Fajita Wraps Ahead Of Time?

Yes these wraps are great for meal prep, and you kind of have two options. First you can prep just the filling and refrigerate that separate from the wraps. When it’s time for dinner you simply heat the filling in a pan, roll the wraps, sear them if you prefer and enjoy. This will have the wraps tasting their freshest and keep any extra toppings from getting soggy.

You can also prep the full burritos and simply reheat them I recommend adding any extras like sour cream and guacamole at the table if you are prepping ahead.

How Do I Keep The Avocado From Turning Brown On My Wraps?

If you’re eating the wraps right away after cooking you can put the avocado straight on the wraps. If you’re preparing these wraps ahead I recommend serving guacamole or fresh avocado at the table to keep it bright green. A squeeze of lime juice over the avocado can also help keep it from browning less.

Can I Freeze This Chicken Fajita Wrap Recipe?

With just meat and vegetables these burritos freeze really well. Wrap the chicken wraps in freezer paper or aluminum foil. Then place in a freezer container or a freezer safe bag. You can also freeze just the fajita mix filling if you prefer.

How Do I Reheat Chicken Fajitas Wraps?

You can reheat these wraps in the microwave, oven or in an air fryer.

Estimated reheating times from the refrigerator:

  • Air Fryer – Reheat in the air fryer at 350 for about 14-16 minutes or until warm all the way through.
  • Oven – Reheat in the oven at 350 for 20-23 minutes or until warm all the way through.
  • Microwave – Reheat in the microwave for 2 minutes or until warm all the way through.

Estimated reheating times from frozen:

  • Air Fryer – Reheat in the air fryer at 370 degrees for about 20-23 minutes or until warm all the way through.
  • Oven – Reheat in the oven at 400 degrees for about 29-32 minutes or until warm all the way through.
  • Microwave – Reheat in the microwave for 2 ½ -3 1/2  minutes or until warm all the way through.

How Long Will Chicken Fajita Wraps Last?

Expect that these wraps will last for about three days when stored in a covered airtight container in the refrigerator. When frozen and stored in freezer safe containers or freezer zip-top bags, expect they will taste their best if eaten within 2-3 months.

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Add bell peppers and red onion to the pan and stir. Cover and cook for 7-8 minutes or until tender. Remove the lid and add chicken to the vegetables and stir. Squeeze lime over chicken and veggies.

Make The Wraps

  • Optional – Spray a clean skillet with cooking spray and place over medium heat. Place the wrap seam side down in the skillet. Cook each side of the wrap until nicely browned about 30 seconds to a minute each side, and repeat with each wrap. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

You can easily add extra toppings like guacamole, sour cream, diced tomatoes or cheese as you prefer, making it easier to customize to everyone’s individual tastes. Sometimes I’ll just serve these extra toppings at the table and my family adds them to their own plate to enjoy.
You can swap out the oregano, cumin, garlic powder, paprika and cayenne pepper for a tablespoon and a half of your favorite taco seasoning. I recommend still adding 1/2 teaspoon of salt and then adding more to taste as necessary when the chicken and vegetables are finished cooking.
Warming the tortillas between two damp paper towels in the microwave for about 30 seconds to a minute can help make them more flexible and easier to roll.
