Ever had steak that’s so tender it practically falls apart? This slow cooker recipe makes steak so incredibly tender it melts, plus adds hearty potatoes and fresh corn for a dinner that will bring everyone around the table together.

Why We Love Steak And Potatoes (In A Crock Pot)

  • Super Tender And Soft Steak – Cooking sirloin steak in the slow cooker makes it tender, juicy and soft which can be a little easier for some kids to enjoy. This makes a dinner that’s similar to garlic butter steak tips or a steak bites recipe.
  • Dinner All In One Pot – I like coming home to the full dinner cooked, vegetables and all. I know I don’t have to add anything special to have a complete meal for the family.
  • Cozy Dinner For Winter, Fresh Feeling For Summer – This dinner is perfect for winter or keeping things fresh in the summer. No need to heat up the kitchen, especially when corn is at its freshest in the summer.

Steak has actually been a harder food for my pickier kid to come around to liking, though I know some kids love it. This steak is a family favorite for us because it is super tender, but before that we experimented with meat and potatoes dinners like these crock pot French dip sandwiches and crock pot Mississippi pot roast. They both worked also because the meat was tender and a little easier to eat with braces!

  • Sirloin steak, cut into cubes. You could use chuck steak also, or sometimes the store as a generic beef stew meat steak which grocery stores sometimes sell cut into cubes already, which also can work in this recipe. Top round roast, bottom round roast or flank steak can also be cubed. All of these cuts will swap easily to make steak tips in this recipe.
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Olive oil
  • White onion, sliced thin
  • Smoked paprika – if you only have a regular paprika, that works too but smoked has more flavor.
  • Steak seasoning
  • Minced garlic
  • Small yellow potatoes – also called baby potatoes, or you can cut bigger yellow potatoes into equal sized pieces
  • Corn – cut into pieces, on the cob. Corn cut off the cob like frozen corn or canned corn kind of gets lost in the bottom of the slow cooker because the pieces are so small in this dinner, but it could be used in a pinch.

How To Make Steak And Potatoes (In A Crock Pot)

  1. Place a large skillet over medium high heat with the olive oil. Season the steak with salt and pepper, then add it to the pan. Sear the steak bites quickly to get a little color on all sides of the steak. We don’t need to cook it through; you just want a quick sear (a little brown color) on the outside.
  2. Place the sliced onion on the bottom of the crockpot. Add the steak on top of the onion. Sprinkle the paprika and steak seasoning over the steak. Sprinkle the minced garlic over the steak.
  1. Add the potatoes and the corn to the bottom of the crock pot. Place butter slices all around the potatoes and corn.
  1. Cover and cook in the slow cooker on low for 6 hours. Both the steak bites and potatoes should be fork tender. Add additional salt and pepper if desired, then enjoy!

Variation Ideas

Add other vegetables – Carrots can easily be added, as can a little celery or bell pepper. Butternut squash can also be cubed and added.

Try other types of potatoes – I’ve used yellow potatoes, but red potatoes will also swap out easily. Russet potatoes can be used but just make sure to cut them into even chunks, so they cook all the way through and evenly. Sweet potatoes are another great option and can be added in large chunks.

Swap out the steak seasoning – regular steak seasoning works, but there are some other blends out there that will be equally delicious. Try a buttery garlic flavored version or even Montreal steak seasoning. If you choose another seasoning, I’d pick one that says it goes well with beef.

How Long Will Steak And Potatoes Last?

Expect these steak and potatoes will last for about 3-4 days if stored in an airtight covered container in the refrigerator. Leftovers can be reheated in the microwave or on the stove top.

Let the crock pot do the work with this flavor-packed steak and potatoes dinner. This dinner is perfect for those nights when you need a family favorite, and I love that the whole dinner is cooked all at once.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds sirloin steak cut into cubes
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium white onion sliced thin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon steak seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 ½ pounds small yellow potatoes
  • 3 ears corn about 6-8 pieces, 3-4 ears of corn with each ear broke in half
  • 1/2 cup butter or 8 tablespoons, usually 1 stick, sliced into thin pieces

Instructions

  • Place a large skillet over medium high heat with the olive oil. Season the steak with salt and pepper, then add it to the pan. Sear the steak bites quickly to get a little color on all sides of the steak, about 2-3 minutes. We don’t need to cook it through; you just want a quick sear (a little brown color) on the outside.
  • Place the sliced onion on the bottom of the slow cooker. Add the steak on top of the onion. Sprinkle the paprika and steak seasoning over the steak. Sprinkle the minced garlic over the steak.
  • Add the potatoes and the corn to the slow cooker. Place butter slices all around the potatoes and corn.
  • Cover and cook in the slow cooker on low for 6 hours. Both the steak bites and potatoes should be fork tender. Add additional salt and pepper if desired, then enjoy!

Notes

I don’t recommend cooking this steak and potatoes recipe in the slow cooker on high. I find that I often have an issue where the potatoes don’t cook all the way through on high. If I cook this recipe on high long enough to cook the potatoes, then I find the steak just becomes a bit too chewy.

This was really good! I made it in a seven qt. Crockpot that tends to cook a lot faster, so I checked it after three hours….it was right at the point where it was all cooked just right, the potatoes done and the meat tender and so flavorful, the corn also ready to eat. As a result we had dinner at a little after 4:00 PM, but no one complained. A keeper…love slow cooker recipes like this that taste good and are easy!

    1. This sounds like it worked out perfect, even if dinner was a little early Vicki. So glad it was delicious, thanks for the 7 quart slow cooker tip!
