Why We Love This Berry Smoothie

  • Delicious Flavor – Sometimes I just know I haven’t been having enough fruits and veggies, and my kid too! Smoothies are a great way to pack in a little extra nutrition in a really tasty way that is also quick and easy to make.
  • Works As Snack, Breakfast or Lunch– While I often will serve this smoothie as a filling snack, it is also perfect for breakfast or lunch. It’s filling
  • Great For Kids And Adults– I sometimes make this fruit smoothie for my daughter and for a snack to share. This recipe is for sure something kids and adults can both enjoy.

For another delicious smoothie, you have to try this Dole Whip smoothie inspired by the infamous treat! Packed full of creamy pineapple, it’s another great smoothie flavor option that kids love too! Or try the lemon ginger tea for another drink full of fresh ingredients.

Ingredients For Berry Smoothie

You only need a few smoothie ingredients for this simple fruity smoothie!

  • 2 cups fresh spinach– You can also use 1/3 cup frozen spinach, which is much more compated then fresh spinach is.
  • ¾ cup almond milk – or milk of your choice. Regular dairy milk and coconut milk are also great. Water can also be used but the smoothie will have less flavor.
  • 2 cups mixed frozen berries– you can also use fresh fruit
  • ½ cup vanilla yogurt– I like vanilla greek yogurt.
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder optional – here is my current favorite protein powder, and it is totally ok for kids despite the flavor. They also have a chocolate if you prefer.
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds optional- I get my chia seeds from Sprouts, but here are some great chia seeds. You can also subsitute ground flax seed or use a mix of chia seeds and flax seeds.

How To Make A Berry Smoothie

  • Place the spinach and almond milk into a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth.
  • Add frozen berries, yogurt, protein powder, chia seeds into the blender. Blend more until smooth.
  • If the mixture is too thick add a little more almond milk a 1/4 cup at a time until it is the right thickness. Serve and enjoy!

Blender Note: If you have a high powered blender like a Ninja blender (I have this set), a Nutribullet (I have this one too) or the infamous Vitamix blender (which is amazing also!) it makes things a little easier. You can add all the ingredients together at once to make this smoothie rather than pulsing the spinach first. Higher power blenders can handle everything a little easier.

Swaps and Alternatives For This Smoothie

Frozen Berry Options– Any frozen fruit can be used to replace berries in this smoothie. You can also use a premade blend of fruit. I’ve tried a berry mix that also has cherries and is really delicious.

Add Frozen Banana– I’m listing banana separartly from the rest of the fruit because banana will make your smoothie creamier and thicker. I usually like adding half of a frozen banana to a smoothie, but you may need to add a little more milk or water to even out the smoothie. When I have a ripe banana that is at it’s end, I throw it in the freezer for smoothies later. It’s also great in this Angel Food Smoothie Copycat Recipe which is a copycat from Smoothie King.

Add Ice– Adding ice to the smoothie can thicken your smoothie a little bit more quickly and easily.

Add Nut Butter– For more of a peanut butter jelly vibe, try adding a tablespoon or two of peanut butter, cashew butter or your favorite nut butter.

What Are The Optional Ingredients In This Recipe??

The optional ingredients in this recipe only effect the overall flavor a little. The smoothie will still be delicious without these ingredients. Instead they give your smoothie more nutrtional punch.

  • Chia Seeds– Chia seeds are completly optional but add a lot of fiber and protein to a smoothie, plus add a plant based omega 3 fatty acids which is a vitamin many of us need more of. Learn more about some of the benefits of adding chia seeds here.
  • Protein PowderThis is my favorite protein powder, I always have some in the house. It has a clean vanilla flavor (that really doesn’t have the bourbon flavor) but my favorite part is that it’s not chalky tasting. I haven’t tried the other flavors but they have many other flavors too. Let me know if you try any! If you don’t have protein powder you can leave it out of the recipe and it will still taste delicious.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  • ¾ cup almond milk or milk of your choice
  • 2 cups mixed frozen berries
  • ½ cup vanilla yogurt
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder optional
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds optional

Instructions

  • Place the spinach and almond milk into a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth.
  • Add frozen berries, yogurt, protein powder, chia seeds into the blender. Blend more until smooth.
  • If the mixture is too thick add a little more almond milk a 1/4 cup at a time until it is the right thickness. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • If you have a high powered blender you can blend everything at the same time. If your blender is not a high powered blender mixing the spinach and the almond milk first can help to break down the spinach so it’s easier to mix everything together smoothly.
  • If substituting frozen spinach use about 1/3 cup in place of two cups of fresh spinach. Frozen spinach is much more condensed then fresh spinach.
  • Chia seeds add good extra protein and fiber to the smoothie, but are optional.
  • Protein powder is also optional in this smoothie but does add a lot of great protein.
