Fresh whole chicken in the instant pot takes about six minutes per pound. Most birds in the store are about four and a half pounds so thirty minutes should cook your bird through.

Frozen whole chicken in the instant pot takes about seven minutes per pound. Most birds that weigh about four and a half pounds will cook from frozen in about 40-45 minutes.
What Else Could Rffect My Cooking Time
Funny story, altitude can sometimes effect cooking length when you are making any recipe in the instant pot. If you live in a higher altitude you may find you need an extra 5-15 minutes.
What If My Whole Chicken In The Instant Pot Is Still Uncooked In The Middle?
First off don’t panic. Chickens can vary slightly in size plus your altitude can effect your cooking time. Close your lid back up and cook your chicken for an additional 10-15 minutes. The pressure cooker does an excellent job of sealing in the juices, your chicken should still be juicy and delicious.
Instant Pot Whole Chicken With Rotisserie Seasonings
Making an instant pot whole chicken is easy, juicy and delicious. With just a few rotisserie seasonings you can have a delicious pressure cooked chicken on your table, or ready to use in recipes for dinner and lunches too.
- 5-6 pound Whole Fresh Raw Chicken
- 1 cup Water
- 1 tablespoon Salt
- 1 tablespoon Garlic Powder Or 10-14 cloves fresh garlic. Minced garlic can also be substituted.
- 1 tablespoon Paprika
- 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
- Check the inside of your chicken for any packets containing innards and remove if included. Drizzle with a little bit of olive oil.
- Sprinkle the seasonings over the chicken. Using a brush, lightly rub the seasonings into the chicken skin.
- Put chicken on a trivet with handles and lower into the Instant Pot. Add 1 cup of water to the pot.
- Close lid on Instant Pot and turn pressure valve to seal.
- Set for a manual high time of 30 minutes (6 minutes per pound). Allow for a natural pressure release of 15 minutes at the end of the cooking time before releasing any remaining pressure by opening the pot. DO NOT do a quick release or your chicken will be dry.
10-14 cloves fresh garlic can be substituted for the garlic powder and is delicious. Minced garlic can also be substituted, I've used a full tablespoon and the chicken comes out deliciously.
I prefer cracked black pepper in my recipes, but you can use your favorite. Cracked black pepper always seems to result in more flavor than standard table black pepper.
