  • milk we used whole milk, see notes in the recipe card
  • white sugar
  • milk chocolate chips – you can also use semi-sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips
  • crushed Oreo cookies – or other crunchy chocolate sandwich cookies. For in the hot cocoa you want the cookies to be more of a powder crumb, but larger chunks can be added to the top of the whipped cream. You can leave the cream filling in the cookies when you crush them, it gives some vanilla flavor too!

Decadent Variation Ideas

Swap The Chocolate Chips – We’ve used milk chocolate chips, but you can get a little creative with the flavors of the chocolate chips. Try white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips or even peanut butter chocolate chips.

Make The Drink Less Sweet – You can adjust the sugar down to taste if you’d prefer, or use alternative sweeteners. When reducing or using alternative sweeteners, I recommend starting by adding half the amount of sweetener, and then adding more to taste as needed.

Leave Out The Chocolate Chips – I have seen some recipes that leave out the chocolate chips and just make the hot chocolate from adding Oreo crumbs to the milk. While I do think this will work, it may take a few more cookies to get the flavor you like, but you are welcome to experiment.

Try Other Flavors Of Oreo Cookies – Oreo has so many different flavors, you can get a little creative with the flavor combinations. Some of the golden Oreo flavors like cinnamon roll for example may taste better if you use white chocolate chips instead of chocolate chips. Feel free to get creative with the flavor combo!

Add Toppings – Try adding mini chocolate chips, fun holiday sprinkles, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce or caramel sauce!

Serve It Cold Over Ice – Try pouring the hot chocolate over ice or blending it into a frappuchino or milkshake style drink.

How Long Will Oreo Hot Chocolate Last?

Leftovers of this hot chocolate can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4-5 days. Any whipped cream or toppings will not hold up in the refrigerator, and should be added after reheating.

  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • cup milk chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Add the milk and white sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir well with a whisk until warm, about five minutes.
  • Stir in the chocolate chips to the milk. Keep stirring with a whisk until the chocolate chips have completely melted and are mixed with the milk.

  • Serve and enjoy! Top with whipped cream, marshmallows or more crushed Oreos if desired.

Notes

We used whole milk in this recipe to produce a rich and creamy hot chocolate. 2% also works great, though skim milk starts to be a lot less creamy.
You can use nondairy milk in this recipe. I recommend using oatmilk for the creamiest nondairy blend, but use your favorite. If you are making this drink nondairy, you can use nondairy chocolate chips. Oreo cookies are technically nondairy, but if the person you are serving has an allergy or intolerance always check with them first as to what they are able to eat and enjoy.
You can crush the Oreo cookies with a food processor. Alternatively, you can put the cookies in a strong freezer-style zip-top bag. Gently with a rolling pin or heavy metal canned good, crush the cookies in the bag until they are crumbs. I like to crush a few extra cookies and adding it on top of the drink at the end as a pretty garnish.
