Why We Love Air Fryer Apple Chips
- Quicker To Make – Apple chips in an oven or a dehydrator can take a really long time to make. The air fryer cuts down on the time it takes to make apple chips by a lot, and the entire family will love these chips. These crispy chips are also a great alternative to store-bought apple chips which can be expensive for apple chips.
- Healthy Snack – The crunchy and sweet combo makes these the perfect healthy crunchy chips, and a delicious snack. Or try throwing apple chips onto the top of your favorite fall salad instead of croutons.

How To Make Apple Chips
- Slice the apple into thin slices (no more then ⅛ of an inch thick) using a mandolin slicer. I don’t really recommend using a sharp knife as it can be really hard to get the apple slices thin enough for this recipe. If the apples aren’t thin enough they won’t become crispy air fryer apple chips and will be chewy.
- Lay the apple slices flat on a smooth surface (like a baking sheet).
- Place cinnamon and sugar in a small mixing bowl and mix together until blended.
- With a spoon or your fingers, sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the thin apple slices.
- Place apples flat in the bottom of the air fryer basket in a single layer, working in batches. Be sure the apple slices do not touch one another. Spraying them lightly with oil can help them to be crispier. See notes at the bottom of the page in the recipe card.
- Bake at 320 for about 8-10 minutes, gently shaking the basket and checking on the apples every 2 minutes. If the chips aren’t crispy try cooking them an additional few minutes. Allow chips to cool completely before serving. A cooling rack can be handy to hold the batches, then enjoy!
What Kind Of Apples Can I Use For Apple Chips?
The best fresh apples for making apple chips are mostly sweet apples, and hold their shape when cooking. The type of apples you choose can make a difference as to the final apple chips being crisp. Here are some of my favorite apples:
- Gala apples
- Fuji apples
- Golden Delicious apples
- Honeycrisp apples
- Pink Lady apples
- Empire apples
- Granny Smith apples- This tart apple will make an apple chip that is a little more tangy and less sweet, but still makes a great chip.
Can I Use A Dehydrated To Make Apple Chips?
An air fryer is much quicker than a dehydrated, which will take at least twelve hours minimum to dehydrate the apples.
Can I Use The Oven To Make Apple Chips?
You can use an oven to make apple chips, but this method also takes longer to make.
- Preheat the oven to 320 degrees.
- Place apples on a baking sheet sliced no more then 1/8 inch so they are not touching on the pan. Season as the recipe mentions below.
- Bake for 1 1/2 to 2 hours until the apples are crunchy.
Why Are My Apple Chips Soft?
The apple chips will be soft if you sliced them thicker then 1/8 an inch. When cut thicker, the apples have too much water in them to get crunchy easily. This happens similarly when you make Air Fryer Zucchini Chips, the zucchini also has a lot of water inside.
Soft apple chips can also just mean that the apples need to be cooked for a few additional minutes. This assumes you sliced the apples thin.
Variations For Apple Chips
- Sprinkling Additional Spice – You can use a homemade pumpkin pie spice or your own favorite pumpkin spice blend on these crunchy apple chips. I like a teaspoon mixed into the sugar. Apple pie spice is also delicious sprinkled on the homemade apple chips.
- Swap Brown Sugar – Brown sugar has more of a molasses flavor and gives it more of a deeper flavor which is delicious.
How Long Will Apple Chips Last?
These apple chips will taste their best if eaten within seven days. If you store the leftover apple chips in an airtight glass container without moisture, the apple chips can keep for two to three months.
I don’t like using traditional cooking spray in my air fryer as it tends to stick to it and make the air fryer gummy and hard to clean. I use Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Spray because the spray has a different type of nozzle and does not need a propellant additive. You can use any oil spray that has this type of nozzle with the same effect.

They just wouldnโt crisp. I tried sticking them under the broiler but ended up burning them – which didnโt crisp them either. Iโm not giving up though. Iโll try them in the future at less than 1/8 inch thick because they showed promise even if floppy and singed.
Hi Vicki, yeah broiling for apple chips doesn’t typically work as well unfortunately because of the high water content we need to dry the water out to make them crispy. How thick did you slice the apple pieces? You want to go as thin as possible, 1/8 inch is the max thickness. Using a mandolin can help to get them a little thinner.
