What’s A Peppermint Patty?

Peppermint patties are a minty candy that is then dipped in chocolate for the ultimate minty chocolate treat. While similar to York Peppermint Patties candy, this homemade version blows them away.

Plus you can totally make them extra fun for the holidays with sprinkles, candy canes in bits or drizzles of red and green chocolate to customize this peppermint patty recipe.

How To Make Peppermint Patties

  1. In a large bowl add condensed milk, peppermint, and powdered sugar. With an electric mixer blend well until a thick dough forms.

  1. Line two baking pans with a piece of parchment paper or wax paper each. Sprinkle a light layer of powdered sugar (also known as confectioners’ sugar onto a large, clean and flat surface like a cutting board or the counter. You could also roll this dough between two sheets of parchment paper instead of using powdered sugar which is a little less messy, but both methods work equally well.
  2. Place the peppermint mixture on top of the powdered sugar. With a rolling pin roll the dough until it is ¼ inch thick.

  1. Using a small round cookie cutter that is 1 inch across, cut the mixture into little patties. Place the peppermint patties on the cookie sheet closely together but not touching. Reroll and repeat slicing the peppermint candies you have cut all the dough. You could also simply roll these peppermint patties into small balls and flatten them.
  2. Place the pans of peppermint patties into the refridgerator and chill them for 45 minutes.
  3. Once the peppermint patties have finished chilling, place the chocolate chips and oil in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring in between until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
  4. Remove the peppermint candies from the refrigerator. Use a fork to dip each peppermint candy in chocolate. Let the excess chocolate drip off the candy back into the bowl once covered.

Variations And FAQ

Sprinkle Some Candy Cane Pieces– You can sprinkle candy cane bits on top of the peppermint patties for a cute and festive treat.

Chocolate Drizzle– Drizzle some melted chocolate on top of these treats to decorate them, or for a contrast try white chocolate or buy candy melts which are pre-colored chocolate wafers you can usually find in the cake decorating section of craft stores. Try red and green candy melts!

Color The Peppermint Patties– You can add food coloring to the peppermint patty mint dough as you are mixing it to make a more colorful treat. Make them red or green for the holidays. You can also split the batch into half red, half green for a colorful surprise in every bite.

Add Vanilla– I don’t always add vanilla extract to these treats, but a 1/2 of a teaspoon of vanilla can pack a lot of delicious flavor that makes them taste more like a buttermint.
