These sloppy joe sliders on Hawaiian rolls are always a hit whether I'm making them for a busy weeknight or game day. Ready in under 30 minutes and the kids go crazy for them every single time!
Ingredients
1teaspoonolive oil
1poundground beefI used 80/20
1/2teaspoonsalt
1/2teaspoonpepper
½onionchopped, white, yellow, sweet or purple
2clovesgarlicminced
¾cupketchup
1tablespoonbrown sugar
1tablespoonWorcestershire sauce
1cupcheddar cheeseshredded
12piecesHawaiian rolls
2tablespoonsbuttermelted, salted
Sesame seedsoptional
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray the bottom of a 9x13 baking sheet with spray cooking oil.
Place olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, allowing it to warm. Add the ground beef, salt and pepper. Break up the meat as it browns until fully cooked and no longer pink, about 3-5 minutes.
Add the onions, garlic, ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture and stir well. Cook until the onions become soft, about 2-3 minutes. Sprinkle the cheese over the meat mixture, then stir and cook until it melts and the mixture thickens, about 1 minute, then set the pan to the side.
½ onion, 2 cloves garlic, ¾ cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 cup cheddar cheese
Slice the rolls in half the long way into sandwiches, a large, serrated knife works well for these soft buns. You should have a connected sheet of bun tops and bottoms when you are finished. Place the bottom buns on the prepared pan.
12 pieces Hawaiian rolls
Spread the sloppy joe beef mixture over the bottom buns, then place the tops of the rolls over the filling.
Using a silicone brush, brush the melted butter over the tops of the buns generously. Be sure to get the tops and the sides. Sprinkle sesame seeds over the top of the buns if desired.
2 tablespoons butter, Sesame seeds
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the buns are golden brown. Then serve and enjoy!
Notes
You can leave the cheese out of the meat mixture if you prefer, and layer it on top of the meat mixture before adding the top bun. The cheese does help the sliders to stick together a little more. They will be a little messier if you leave it out of the recipe.A baking sheet can be used, or a glass baking dish or ceramic baking pan can be used as long as it fits the sliders. I often line mine with aluminum foil before spraying with cooking oil, or use parchment paper and no extra oil.
