Creamy, buttery, and garlicky, these Yukon Gold mashed potatoes are the best homemade side dish for any holiday or family dinner.

1 potato peeler

1 Large pot
1 Colander
1 Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients
5poundsYukon Gold potatoespeeled and diced, or any yellow potato
2teaspoonssaltdivided
½cupbuttersalted
1tablespoonminced garlic
1cupmilkI've used 2%, you can use what you have on hand
¾cupsour cream
1 1/2cupsColby cheeseshredded, divided
1 1/2cupsMonterey Jack cheeseshredded, divided
½cupParmesan cheeseshredded finely
pepperto taste
Instructions
Place potatoes and 1 ½ teaspoons of salt in a large pot. Fill the pot with water until the potatoes are covered with water. Turn the heat to high and bring the water and potatoes to a boil. Reduce the temperature to medium and boil the potatoes for 25 minutes. Potatoes are done when they are tender when pierced with a fork.
5 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, 2 teaspoons salt
Drain the hot water from the potatoes with a colander. Place the potatoes back in the pot and mash up the potatoes with a potato masher.
Put the butter and garlic in the pot with the hot potatoes, stirring well until the butter is melted. Add milk and sour cream, stirring until smooth.
½ cup butter, 1 tablespoon minced garlic, 1 cup milk, ¾ cup sour cream
Add the Colby cheese, Monterey Jack cheese, parmesan cheese, ½ teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste to the potatoes. Mix the potatoes until well combined. serve and enjoy.

Notes
You can leave the potatoes unpeeled if you prefer, but it will change the texture of the mashed potatoes a little.I usually use a potato masher, but you can also use a hand mixer right in your cooking pot on low and then medium speed. You can also place the cooked potatoes in a stand mixer on low until smooth.
